TORONTO 8, TEXAS 7 (11 INNINGS)

TORONTO Kevin Millar singled home the winning run in the 11th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers 8-7.

Vernon Wells walked to begin the 11th and went to second on Travis Sniders sacrifice bunt. Scott Rolen was walked intentionally and C.J. Wilson (0-2) was replaced by right-hander Darren ODay, who was claimed on waivers from the New York Mets earlier in the day.

ODay landed in Toronto at 9:45 p.m. and went directly to the stadium. He pitched wearing Kason Gabbards jersey because there wasnt time to get him one of his own.

Millar greeted ODay with a single over the drawn-in outfield, scoring Wells.

BOSTON 10, MINNESOTA 1 (7 INNINGS)

BOSTON Tim Wakefield pitched a five-hitter for his second consecutive complete game and the Boston Red Sox earned their sixth straight victory, beating the Minnesota Twins 10-1 in seven innings as rain shortened the opener of a scheduled day-night doubleheader.

Scott Baker (0-2) gave up a two-run homer in each of the first three inningsto Kevin Youkilis, Nick Green and Mike Lowelland the Red Sox added four runs in the seventh before umpires signaled for the tarp with one out. The game was called after a delay of 1 hour, 25 minutes.

Bostons Brad Penny was scheduled to face Francisco Liriano in the night game, though rain was forecast throughout the evening.

BOSTON 7, MINNESOTA 3

BOSTON Brad Penny pitched six solid innings after Tim Wakefield won a rain-shortened complete game, and the Boston Red Sox finished a doubleheader sweep of the Minnesota Twins with a 7-3 victory.

Wakefield (2-1) tossed a five-hitter for his second consecutive complete game in the opener, a 10-1 victory that was called after seven innings because of rain. Kevin Youkilis, Nick Green and Mike Lowell each hit a two-run homer.

Penny (2-0) allowed two earned runs in the finale of the day-night doubleheader as the Red Sox extended their winning streak to seven games after a 2-6 start. Jeff Bailey hit a three-run homer and David Ortiz had a two-run double against Francisco Liriano (0-4).

NY YANKEES 9, OAKLAND 7 (14 INNINGS)

BRONX, New York Melky Cabrera ended a home run-filled opening homestand at the new Yankee Stadium with a two-run drive in the 14th inning to give New York a 9-7 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

The Yankees overcame another shaky outing from CC Sabathia on a rainy afternoon that featured five more home runs. But after Oakland tied the score in the seventh, what had been a $1.5 billion hitters haven turned into a pitchers park until Cabreras drive off Dan Giese (0-2).

Hideki Matsui and Cabrera hit consecutive homers in the second off Brett Anderson to start the comeback for New York, which opened 4-2 at its new ballpark after going 4,133-2,430-17 at the original Yankee Stadium.

CHI WHITE SOX 8, BALTIMORE 2

BALTIMORE Jim Thome hit his 545th career homer to back a superb pitching performance by John Danks, and the Chicago White Sox beat Jeremy Guthrie and the Baltimore Orioles 8-2.

Danks (2-0) allowed one run, four hits and no walks in seven innings. The left-hander has given up only two runs in 19 innings this season, both on solo homers.

Danks permitted two hits in the first inning, but picked off Brian Roberts after the first one. He retired 19 of the final 21 batters, the exceptions a fifth-inning homer by Luke Scott and a single in the seventh by Ty Wigginton.

Guthrie (2-1) gave up five runs and eight hits in six-plus innings.

KANSAS CITY 2, CLEVELAND 0

CLEVELAND Brian Bannister and two relievers outpitched reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 2-0.

Lee (1-3) allowed two runs and nine hits over eight innings, but matched his loss total of last season. A year ago, the left-hander went 5-0 against the Royals on the way to a 22-3 record and 2.54 ERA. He didnt get his third loss until Sept. 23 at Boston.

Bannister (1-0), recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday, improved to 4-1 with a 1.62 ERA in six career starts against Cleveland. The right-hander allowed four hits and walked only one against an Indians offense that came in leading the majors with 76 bases on balls in 14 games.

DETROIT 12, LA ANGELS 10

ANAHEIM, California Curtis Granderson homered again, Brandon Inge also went deep and the Detroit Tigers used a five-run seventh inning to beat the Los Angeles Angels, 12-10.

Angels reliever Scot Shields (0-2) threw 18 pitches in the seventh without retiring a batter and walked Gerald Laird with the bases loaded to put Detroit within 8-7.

Jose Arredondo came in, and two more runs crossed the plate when shortstop Erick Aybar made an errant flip to second baseman Maicer Izturis on Inges RBI infield hit. Adam Everett hit a bloop RBI single to left that fell just out Aybars reach, and Placido Polancos run-scoring infield hit gave Detroit an 11-8 lead.

Juan Rincon (1-0) got the win, allowing a run and two hits in an inning of relief.

TAMPA BAY 9, SEATTLE 3

SEATTLE Carl Crawford had four hits and Evan Longoria had three to back the strong pitching of rookie Jeff Niemann, and the Tampa Bay Rays finally scored big without a home run in a 9-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Making his fifth career start, the 6-foot-9 Niemann (1-2) allowed just three hits and two earned runs before tiring noticeably and leaving with one out in the sixth.

Carlos Pena and Longoria each had two RBI as last seasons darling team won for only the second time in eight games.

Longorias double in the fourth gave him 100 career RBI, in the 2008 AL rookie of the years 135th game. The only active players to get to 100 RBI more quickly were Ryan Braun (118 games) and Albert Pujols (131).
